Relief of a charioteer standing in a chariot drawn by two horses, Kyzikos (late 6th c. BC)
Description
Peninsula of Artaki / Erdek (present Kapıdağ Peninsula), ancient Kyzikos (or Cyzicus) / Belkıs: Marble relief of a charioteer standing in a chariot drawn by two horses galloping to right (last quarter of 6th c. BC). The driver wears a short chiton (dress) with long sleeves made by a thin material. He holds the reins in his left hand and the whip in his right hand. This slab of marble (height 55 cm, width 72 cm.) with the beautiful archaic relief was probably part of a frieze which decorated a small monument of the Ionic style. Archaeological Museum, Istanbul
