Ice in the river
Description
'Asia is adjacent to Europe, bordering thereon along the River Tanaïs...' Thus opens the first of Strabo's books describing Asia Geography XI.1.1). For the city that shared the river's name `a foundation of the Greeks who control the Bosporos', he provides ample information, as he does also for Lake Maiotis. About the river upstream of the delta, Strabo knows nothing: its sources are `not visible'. The Don, flowing 1,870 km., rises south of Moscow and its drainage basin extends to 422,000 sq. km.
The canal opened, under Stalin, to link the Don with the Volga is 101 km. long.
