Title
The ancient 'throne' at the Sultan's Castle in Çanakkale (in 2000)
Description
Çanakkale, the Sultan's Castle (Kale-i Sultaniye) photo 06. An ancient 'throne' was used as building material as well as decorative element at the entrance of the interior fortress, to the right of the gate (see photo 05). This marble seat came from some ruined Greek or Greco-Roman theatre in the area of Troy (perhaps from Sigeion, Achilleion or Abydos). The marble is from the nearby island of Marmara (ancient Prokonnesos), famous for the good quality of its white marble.
