Title
St Gregory of Nyssa, embroidered icon on silk ground with gold and silver wire, Trebizond late 17th c.
Description
Icon from St Gregory of Nyssa, the old Greek-Orthodox cathedral of Trebizond (late 17th c.) photo 01. The icon of St Gregory of Nyssa, depicted seated on a throne at the center, is embroidered on a dark red silk ground with gold and silver wire. Represented in the upper zone is the Deesis (Supplication), with Christ as Great High Priest flanked by the Virgin, Saint John the Baptist, and two archangels. In the lower zone are four hierarchs and at the sides, to the left and right of the enthroned St Gregory, are four saints: St Andrew, St Paraskevi, St Kyriaki, and St Anastasia the Deliverer from Poison (Pharmakolytria). These saints correspond to the four side-chapels of the metropolitan church of Trebizond, each of which was dedicated to one of them.
