In the closing years of the seventeenth century an aged Cretan refugee called Zuanne Papadopoli, who had fled from his homeland at the time of its conquest by the Ottomans, sat down in his adopted city of Padua to write his memoirs. He could never have imagined that centuries later his writings would be the subject of lively interest and extreme curiosity among researchers on the history and culture of Crete under Venetian rule. The reason for this special interest is that although numerous official archival sources have survived from this historical period, thanks to the intense bureaucratic activity which the Serenissima's state agencies had developed, research on the private life of the people of this Venetian-ruled Greek island has had to be based largely on the registers of Cretan notaries, which for all their richness and chronological breadth, deal only with certain aspects of social reality. Papadopoli's memoirs are a historical document of a different type, offering a wealth of information exceptionally useful for research into the Venetian past of the Great Island.
