Title
Bakırköy, before the demolition of the west part of St George’s church, May 1985
Description
Bakırköy, demolition 3. Exterior of the church of St. George. The condemned west side of the building: west facade (including the church entrance), narthex and west side of the main body of the church.
One can clearly see that the church was truncated in order to widen the already ample sidewalk to the west of the church and not, as the officials declared, to widen the road. The road, in fact, remained as it was and the sidewalk was increased by no less than seven meters. In any case, the excuse of unsound town-planning cannot disguise the political motivation behind the decision to demolish church property. The photograph was taken in May 1985, before the demolition.
