Akilas Millas, Stamps of Constantinople. Parishes of the Most Holy Archbishopric. Monograph in Greek on the history of the Orthodox parishes in the Archbishopric of Constantinople, as well as the social and professional lives of the Greek Orthodox in the Ottoman capital. Stamps constitute the primary source for Millas’s study: thousands of stamped impressions, stamps and wax seals used by those in charge of the parishes, both clerics and laymen, members of school committees, professional associations etc.

Ioli Milla was responsible for the impressions. Inserted into Millas’s text are sections from the unpublished work of Manuel Gedeon, “Ten churches dedicated to the Mother of God inside the walls of Constantinople”, excerpted from the manuscript housed in the Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive (E.L.I.A.). The text is accompanied by the author’s paintings and drawings of monuments and objects. The use (and publication) of original documents qualifies this publication as a primary source.

“Introduction”, pp. 15-26. The chapter “Phanar”, pp. 31-126, covers the neighborhood of that name and the Ecumenical Patriarchate – site of the Archbishopric of Constantinople. “Parishes inside the walls of Constantinople”, pp. 127-299, covers all the parishes of the Old City. “Parishes of Pera”, for Pera / Beyoğlou, see pp. 301-437, for the European side of the Bosphorus, see pp. 438- 492. For the monastery of the Life-receiving Spring (Balıklı kilise), pp. 494-497 and for the Hospital – National Philanthropic Office (Balıklı), pp. 498-509. “Associations in Istanbul”, pp. 511-635. For publishing houses, printers, bookshops, newspapers and periodicals, see pp. 637-668. Notes, pp. 669-722. Bibliography, pp. 723-729. Glossary, pp. 731-735. Index, pp. 737-765. Large format, total pages 768.
