This photographic reprint of the two-volume work by T.A. Gritsopoulos, The Patriarchal Great School of the Nation (in Greek), was made in 2004 on the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the School’s foundation. Volume 2 presents a summary of the first volume (pp 1-61) and continues with a detailed investigation of the period 1804 to 1923, starting with the School’s transfer in 1804 from the Phanar to the suburb of Xerokrini (Kuruçeşme) on the Bosphorus. The School operated at this new venue from 1804 to 1825, including its boarding house which re-opened its doors from 1836 until 1850. Subsequently the School returned to various locations in the Phanar until the impressive quarters in the Upper Phanar were constructed and finally inaugurated in September 1882. This new age for the School, 1882-1923, is discussed in the last four chapters of Part 7, pp 268-336. Appendix: Patriarchal and other documents (from princes and sultans) pp 351-452. Consolidated Index for both volumes, pp 453-477. At the end of the book, pp 479-487, appears a list of the author’s works. Total pages α-ιστ' and 1-488. See also Vol 1 for the extensive Bibliography for both volumes (pp ια'-ις' and 1-16) and the School’s first 350 years: 1454-1804.
