Scholarly communication at the Symposium entitled Halcyon Days in Crete I, A Symposium Held in Rethymnon 11-13 January 1991. The distinguished Turkologist Halil Inalcik analyzes the geomorphology of the area around the Gulf of Nicomedia as well as the Bithynian hinterland as far as Nicaea / Iznik to reveal the physical context in which the battle of Bapheus was fought (1301). The encounter was fateful for the future of Byzantine Nicaea, which was cut off and besieged by the Ottomans of Osman gazi, founder of the Osman / Ottoman dynasty. Accompanied by a map of Bithynia 1300-1350 (p 99) and 4 BW phot of area in which the battle was fought (between pp 96 and 97).
