Data
Acts of the Symposium entitled (in Turkish) “The Golden Horn of yesterday and today” which took place on 22-23 May 2003 in the area of Cibali in Istanbul, sponsored by the Kadir Has Üniversitesi. Among the 53 contributions included in the volume and which refer generally to the history of the Golden Horn one finds communications about each of the historic neighborhoods, such as Cibali, Fener, Balat, Eyüp and others, as well as the non-Muslim communities of Istanbul who lived in these neighborhoods (Greek Orthodox, Jews, Bulgarian Orthodox) and their religious monuments. There are also communications about economic activities in the area, such as fishing, the tobacco industry, foreign companies active here in the past, old shipping companies etc. Still other articles are concerned with the problem of pollution in the Golden Horn and its surroundings from the Ottoman period until the present, such as that entitled “The yesterday and today of pollution in the environs of the Golden Horn”, “The redevelopment plans for the Golden Horn”, “Changes in biodiversity” and others. Two of the 53 communications are accompanied by an English summary pp. 605-606, 615. At the end of each article is a brief bibliography. The volume is richly illustrated, including phot material (BW and archival phot), maps, plans and drawings. Total pages 622.
