Data
Walking thru Byzantium. Great Palace Region is an archaeological guide focusing on the (mainly early) Byzantine monuments in the historic center of Istanbul, the area known today as Sultanahmet, from Hagia Sophia, the Mese and the Hippodrome to the dozens of buildings in the Palatine complex and the church of Sts Sergius and Bacchus near the Sea of Marmara. The book is based on the “Byzantium 1200 Project”, a digital program that shows the Byzantine monuments in 3D Modelling. The inspiration behind the program, and its director, is A. Tayfun Öner, who put to use all the visual and archaeological material available, as well as the wealth of written sources, to re-present the Byzantine city. The text is by Jan Kostenec, phot by Çalışlar, Öner and Kostenec, drawings by Holoğlu and Ulugerçek. Advisors: Albrech Berger, Jonathan Bardill and Jan Kostenec. This small and easily-to-use guide includes more than 150 illustrations, many from the three dimensional representations, and a map of the route recommended to the visitor on foot. Bibliography pp. 164-167. Index p. 168. See also the program’s website: www.byzantium1200.com
