Title
Persepolis, Apadana: Lydians bringing gifts to the Great King
Description
Persepolis, Apadana-Procession phot 072. Lydians bringing gifts-part of the annual taxes to the Great King; detail of the “Lydians” from the long Procession which decorates the staircase at the E side of the Apadana palace. This marvelous work of art of the late Archaic period, preserved in good condition, depicts two of a group of representatives of Lydia which was part of one of the 20 Satrapies organized by Darius I (as mentioned by Herodotus, Histories III, 90). The second person carries two vases with handles made in the form of winged mythical animals. At the far left we can see the silver bowls carried by a third member of the group (who is out of the picture).
