Sir Cecil Maurice Bowra (1898-1971), a classical scholar and academic, Warden of Wadham College, Oxford, from 1938 to 1970, was known for his wit. His first book on ancient Greek poetry, Pindar's Pythian Odes, was published in 1928; Landmarks in Greek Literature (first published in 1966) is his fifteenth work on the same subject.
