Sophia Rizopoulou, Garden of Pray; From a Byzantine Manuscript at Oxford to the Botanical Garden of the Philodasiki [Philodasiki Enosi of Athens] (Kaleidoscope Publications, Athens 2012), in Greek.
Sophia (sometimes written as Sofia) Rizopoulou, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Biology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, presents a garden in the East Mediterranean as described by two anonymous Byzantines in a manuscript of the 13th c. found at the Bodleian Library. Their garden has many trees but, at the same time, each one of them is a symbol of the many human virtues; thus the whole garden can be seen as “A Garden of Pray”.
S.R. is looking for the same spaces in the beautifully arranged Botanical Garden of the Philodasiki Enosi of Athens, near the byzantine Monastery of Kaissariane, and gives information about each tree. With the help of Panos Kokkinias’s photos and the drawings made by Mireille Bessis the reader can enjoy a visit to the real and the symbolic garden. Total pages, 96.
