The Muradiye, an imperial Mosque of 1435 dominates the Thracian countryside
Description
N-NE of Edirne photo 06. In the landscape of NE Edirne the neglected Muradiye Mosque is dominant. ‘The most impressive of the eyvan mosques in Edirne is the Muradiye Mosque, which perches by itself on top of a hill to the northeast of the city. It was built by Murad II in 1435 (A.H. 839) as a convent for the Mehlevi order of dervishes but the conventicle was later converted into a mosque during the reign of the same sultan.’ (Aptullah Kuran)
