Assos, goddess Athena’s temple: the shaft of the Doric columns with their severe flutings

Assos, the acropolis and upper city photo 112. One can easily recognize the restored drums (parts of a column) which were made on purpose by different material. Nevertheless, the harmony of the flutings is admirable and the austerity of the dark stone combined with the severe Doric style give an impressive character to this badly destroyed monument. From the top of the acropolis the temple is ‘flying’ in the sky.
