Title
Saint Eugenios of Trebizond / Yeni Cuma Camii (1988)
Description
Saint Eugenios, Trebizond: general view. The katholikon of the former monastery of Saint Eugenios, the church of Trebizond's patron saint, is an impressive building of the period of the Grand Komnenoi (late 13th c.), located east of the walls of Trebizond. Important scriptoria specializing in calligraphy, copying, and illuminating manuscripts – operated at this monastery. After 1461, the church was converted into a mosque, with the addition of a minaret and minor interventions in the interior, which did not, however, alter the architectural aspect of the Komnenian building (except for the entrance that was opened at the east end, i.e. in the old apse, as is clear in the photograph).
