Sofia Akrivopoulou, “The Rotunda of Thessaloniki and the Surrounding Area” in The Archaeological Work in Macedonia and Thrace (Thessaloniki 2015) vol. 29 (Published in 2020) pp. 295-310 in Greek; Abstract in English (p. 310): “From the mid-19th century until today, the study of the Rotunda focuses on three issues: the dating, the use and the form of the monument, in the time of its erection and after the major renovation of the early Christian period. The dates proposed were in the time of Constantine, by Texier and Pullan, and of Galerius, by Hébrard. The uses proposed were funerary and worshiping (mausoleum, martyrium and palatial church). The original Roman form of the building is safely traced. Hébrard’s researches threw light on the early Christian renovation, and his conclusions remain till now undisputed. The surrounding area, however, remains largely unknown, as it was partially researched twice, by Hébrard and Dyggve, and the results of these investigations (especially of the second period) remain largely unpublished. Nevertheless a stereotype was created, that of an octagonal or semi-octagonal enclosure, with the two semicircular apses at the East and West ends, in which burial crypts were inscribed. This stereotype affected strongly the interpretation of the building. In this article the shape of this enclosure is disputed. The arguments are based on the study of the earliest tombs on the south side of the monument and on a hitherto unpublished find, a part of a precinct located outside the current wall, to the west. Moreover a two stage scheme on the transformation of the Roman monument into a Christian church is proposed.”
