The Manaki brothers, Yiannis / Yanaki and Miltos / Milton Maniakia, born in Avdella, a Vlach village in the Regional Unit of Grevena (West Macedonia, Greece), were photography and cinema pioneers within the Balkans of 1900 – than, still part of the Ottoman Empire. They traveled through the countryside and the urban centers of the Balkans, documenting not only the lives of the hardworking people, their moments of relaxation and entertainment, but also architectural landmarks, historical and social events that mark the changes of the first half of the 20th century. The one hundred photographs of this bilingual album, from the personal archive of Leonidas Manaki, son of Miltos, donated to the Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia (IMMA) by the Honorary Ambassador Mr. Alexandros Mallias, were presented for the first time in an exhibition at the Museum in Thessaloniki (Febr. – December 2023).
