Description
Bukovina, Monastery of Suceviţa, photo 35. The Heavenly Ladder of St John Klimax / John Climacus / Ioannis Klimakos. Ranks of angels stand guard for the pious monks ascending the thirty-rung ladder, while those who succumb to temptation are dragged off by demons and fall into Hell. This didactic scene covers the north exterior wall of the katholikon (main church) of the princely monastery. The Suceviţa wall-paintings of 1595 are attributed to the Moldavian brothers Sofronie and Ioan.
