Our purpose is to examine the political, administrative and ecclesiastical development of Thrace in the 10th-12th centuries. First of all we define its geographical boundaries basing upon the sources. In a preliminary part we examine Thrace politically and administratively from the 4th until the 9th century. We are particularly occupied with the nomination of Thrace's thema "Macedonia". In the main part we initially present the political history of Thrace in the 10th-12th centuries. Among the others we are occupied with the velations of Byzantium with Bulgarians. Consequently, basing upon the sources, we present Thrace's thematical organization during that time. The whole elaboration of the elements which the sources provide explains many questions about Thrace's administrative organization in those centuries. In the final part we expose the changes of the ecclesiastical organization of the district until the 12th c. All sources testify the continual Byzantine administration in the larger part of Thrace's geographical district from the 4th until the 12th c.
