From the Preface: The year 2020 marked 100 years since the liberation of Western Thrace and its integration into the national fabric. The entry of another region into the young Greek state also meant its integration into the administrative machinery. Thus, the antiquities—which until then had been cared for by associations and solitary collectors spontaneously and "amateurishly," yet with all their heart and great effort—found themselves under the protection of the archaeological law. This was achieved neither automatically nor easily. It was a difficult period for the Greek state, which, through successive wars, refugee influxes, and political instability, was trying to integrate the New Territories into the slightly older national fabric, without possessing sufficient resources and personnel.
We will attempt to present here, in the form of a chronicle, the entire adventure of archaeology in Greek Thrace over the last 100 years, with the hope of making understood the struggles that were fought, the prevailing conditions, and the results that were produced.
The study is divided into two parts. The first part presents the evolution of archaeological activity in Thrace, the first identifications of findings and sites, the first official declarations [of archaeological sites], the administrative evolution and growth of the Ephorates, the participation of local societies, and their interaction with state agencies. The second part presents the archaeological collections and museums of Thrace, their foundation, evolution, and dialogue with local societies. Folklore collections were also briefly included here, as the conditions of their creation, as well as their content, kept pace and interacted with official museum and archaeological activity. >>>>> https://www.academia.edu/111809914/100_%CF%87
