“Iphigenia among the Taurians” or “Iphigeneia in Tauris”. The play is dated in 413 BC. Taurica or Taurici was the name given by the ancient Greeks to the Crimean peninsula and Tauroi (or Taurians) was the barbarian people who lived in the Crimea. According to the myth, Iphigenia was saved from the sacrificial altar by the wild goddess Artemis who drove the innocent victim to her Crimean Sanctuary (in the land of the Tauroi / the Taurica peninsula) where Orestes found her.
