The pioneering archaeologist Dr Sümer Atasoy completed the first surface survey of the site within the military zone in 1993 and 1994. In 1996 he led an expedition from the Trakya University of Edirne, and wrote this study on the identity of ancient Amisos (in Turkish, with a summary in English pp. 109-116).
