The publication was prepared (in Greek) on the occasion of the homonymous exhibition jointly organised by the Greek Ministry of Culture, the Museum of Byzantine Civilisation of Thessaloniki and the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, in Thessaloniki (October 1997 – January 1998) and in Nicosia (March – May 1998). The volume includes essays on the political, cultural and economic history of Cyprus from the Late Byzantine up to the end of the Ottoman period (12th – 19th c.), as well as incunabula, engravings and cartographic exhibits on Cyprus by European travellers from the 16th to the 19th century, and detailed entries for the 226 exhibits. Items exhibited include Byzantine icons and ecclesiastical relics from the Archbishopric of Cyprus, the Bishoprics of Limassol, Paphos and Morphou, the Holy Monastery of Ayios Neophytos and the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation as well as from the collections of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, the Pierides Foundation and the Cyprus Department of Antiquities.
