Ioannes Kaminiates, cleric and kouboukleisios, "On the Fall of Thessalonike" (in Greek). Uniquely important Byzantine source and at the same time an autobiographical narrative of high literary caliber (here in modern Greek translation without the original text). In the first part, Ioannes Kaminiates treats the capture of Thessalonike by the Saracen pirates of Crete in 904, describing the horrendous events which followed. In the second part he relates the conditions under which thousands of Thessalonicans were captured and transported to harbors in the East. The author himself was a captive. The gripping tale is one of four Byzantine texts included in the book entitled Chronicles of the Falls of Thessalonike with Prologue (pp. 9-10), extensive Introduction (pp. 11-65) and Notes by Paolo Odorico. In modern Greek.
